Small Business Protection. Redefined.

Carolina Computer Concepts announces a revolutionary business continuity/data protection product and service to the small business market.

Released just one week ago, the Datto ALTO device is taking the small business market in a big way.  Until now small businesses found that getting truly enterprise level business data protection came at a price that was out of reach for many.  Small businesses have turned to less effective forms of data backup which do not provide the level of protection they need. Of course I have a backup… I think.

With litterly 1000s of backup choices which one is right for you?  Yes, I spelled it that way on purpose…lol.  The Internet is littered with companies fighting for your data and your dollar.  The question is… which one is right for you?

Honestly, that question has been answered many times and a quick Google search will give you a ton of options.  The bigger question shouldn’t be which backup service is best but rather which recovery is best.  After all, you can backup everything including the kitchen sink but if the recovery of that data doesn’t meet your needs then its worthless in the end. Microsoft Office 2013 vs. Office 365

Two weeks ago, Microsoft backpedaled from a sweeping change on how it licensed retail copies of Office 2013, deciding that it would, after all, let customers move the software from one machine to another.

That reversal mooted the original end-user licensing agreement (EULA), which had permanently tied “perpetual” licenses — those paid for once, with rights to use them as long as desired — to the first PC they were installed on.

And it again made for fairly straight-forward calculations when trying to decide the better deal between buy-once-run-forever copies of Office, and the rent-not-own deals that Microsoft wants consumers to adopt. Continue reading “Microsoft Office 2013 vs. Office 365”

Do you have a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)???

If you answered NO to the above question, you are not alone and you are one of the many businesses that do not have a Business Continuity Plan (BCP). Even companies that have a BCP, do not periodically update it or verify its accuracy, leading to an outdated and ineffective plan.

This is a sad but true fact. Building an effective, real-saver BCP is time consuming. However, the most basic BCP is definitely a better alternative to having none. Continue reading “Do you have a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)???”

Is Facebook infecting your computer?

Sadie Ouse, a high school senior, never saw it coming.

Recently, a hacker commandeered her Facebook account. Using a common malware tactic, the hacker sent a message to all of her friends with a link to the site homeincomenow3.com, operated by “Zhang Lei” in Beijing, China. A Norton security scan of the site revealed a high-level virus that can damage your computer.

“I had no idea this was happening,” Ouse told FoxNews.com. Continue reading “Is Facebook infecting your computer?”

MyCleanPC.com SCAM?

SCAM ALERT

As a long time computer support technician, this really gets my blood boiling! I have worked in the computer industry since 1998 and I loathe “PC repair” companies like Best Buy and Staples (just to name a couple).  I consider these to be way over-priced, and not as effective as someone who was not corporately trained.

However, the most egregious SCAM comes from these “PC repair” TV commercials.  Lets just look at one in particular that I see nearly ever day… mycleanpc.com.   Continue reading “MyCleanPC.com SCAM?”

Is your webcam allowing anyone to watch you?

The above images were taken of an unsuspecting family inside their home.  How is this possible?

The increasing use and popularity of Webcams and IP cameras also have a drawback if you happen to be the owner of a TRENDnet camera with a security vulnerability.  This vulnerability was announced about a year ago and the company quickly patched the security hole and began a campaign to make owners of TRENDnet products aware of the problem and how to fix it.

So why is this being discussed still, a year later? Continue reading “Is your webcam allowing anyone to watch you?”

Where do I “Start”?

No Start button?! The biggest change to the Desktop in Windows 8 is that there is no Start button. In previous versions, the Start button was a very common place to go to launch apps, access settings, or search the computer. Although these features are now accessible from the Start screen, many people may find it disorienting to use Windows without the Start button. Continue reading “Where do I “Start”?”
